Situated opposite Shrewsbury Abbey, it is no surprise that it is reputed to be the haunt of a monk. Another ghost is thought to be a Dutch Cavalry Officer who was charged with murder, swiftly court marshalled and hanged at the inn's stables.

The hotel is partly named in honour of a local squire named 'Mad Jack' Mytton who frittered away some of his fortune on several bottles of port on a daily basis. Charged with debts he couldn't pay, he died in prison and the funeral procession stopped at the hotel where 'Mad Jack' is now reputed to haunt.
