This is a tale that legends are made from. The squire, a man named Boughton, would affably go about his business, but once deceased it is said that his ghost began to cause havoc, especially driving a coach and horses. He was duly exorcised and his essence trapped in a bottle reputed to be hidden at the hall. It doesn't seem to have worked too well as there are still the sounds of horses, the wheels of a carriage and footsteps to be heard.

The ghost that haunts here is said to be a monk named Geoffrey who was murdered at the abbey in 1345, his murderer never being found. The abbey was opened as an exclusive, meaning expensive, hotel in 1994.

When the building was a working water mill, a woman, said to have been trapped and drowned under the wheel, now haunts here. A mummified cat was found during excavations and having been taken from the hotel a number of times ensures bad luck until it is returned. The last attempt to remove it was in 1999.
